Creating beautiful technical documents has long been associated with LaTeX. While incredibly powerful, LaTeX often comes with a steep learning curve that can discourage newcomers and slow down even experienced users. Recent developments in open-source publishing have introduced new alternatives, and one of the most promising is Typst.

In this R-Ladies Rome tutorial, we were delighted to welcome Derek Sollberger, Lecturer in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Princeton University, for an engaging introduction to Typst for Efficient Typesetting.

The event attracted participants from around the world, with attendees joining us from Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, France, Spain, Montenegro, Tunisia, Kenya, China, Chile, Mexico, Canada, and across the United States. Many participants shared that they were completely new to Typst, while others had experimented with it through Quarto or were long-time LaTeX users curious about modern alternatives. The international participation once again highlighted the global reach of the R-Ladies community and the growing interest in reproducible publishing tools.

🧩 Workshop Overview

Derek began by introducing the motivation behind Typst: a modern typesetting system designed to simplify document creation while producing professional-quality output.

The workshop demonstrated how Typst integrates naturally with Quarto, allowing users to generate polished PDFs without the complexity traditionally associated with LaTeX. Rather than focusing on syntax alone, Derek explained the design philosophy behind Typst and showed how its cleaner language and rapid compilation make technical writing more approachable.

Throughout the session, participants explored how to:

  • create publication-quality PDF documents with Quarto and Typst
  • customize layouts and typography
  • work with figures and tables
  • manage citations and cross-references
  • build reproducible publishing workflows using open-source tools

The presentation was highly practical, with numerous live demonstrations illustrating how quickly documents can be compiled and customized.

The discussion continued during the Q&A session, where participants asked about topics such as page breaks, table handling, and document customization. Derek also shared the companion blog post for the workshop, giving attendees a resource they could revisit after the session.

One interesting aspect of the event was the number of experienced LaTeX users in attendance who were curious to see whether Typst could simplify their existing workflows. At the same time, many newcomers appreciated how accessible the syntax appeared, making the session valuable regardless of prior experience.
